FF7 - Reno - Infiltrate Your Mind
[personal profile] ilyat
My [community profile] hardmode assignment was to provide illustration for [personal profile] synecdochic's absolutely amazing Final Fantasy 7 AU epic, Lullabye for the New World Order. I have been so thrilled to have this assignment. While the official posting deadline is now up, I fully intend to work on some more illustrations to accompany Act 1 - and hopefully beyond! I have two in-progress images already underway that I did not feel were ready to be posted; expect to see them in the weeks to come.

Tseng and Tifa, taken from a moment in Section 1. )

Please definitely take the time to read Lullabye - if you are a fan of FF7, or just of good writing in general. It's entirely possible to follow it without any game knowledge.

I know that there are more than a few of you on the watched lists who will enjoy it as much as I have so far. :)

Naruto/Warriors crossover, SERIOUSLY
Team 7 (with Warriors-verse appropriate names; you'll figure them out)
~1900 words
for [personal profile] cypher, who is an enabler

Foxpaw bounces around the clearing ahead of the other three, his tail held high and his bright golden fur puffed out in all directions. "Foxpaw, Foxpaw!" he squeals, entirely too pleased with his new name now that he's graduated from being a kit to a proper Apprentice.

I have determined already that Sai is a delicious and wonderful program, and I love it dearly. I started on a sketch for a side project, too, with the linework done exclusively in it and.. oh man. Oh man. It's even more delicious. <3

I recently got PaintTool SAI, which is an absolutely amazing program. It's almost as if OpenCanvas had a bastard child with a super model, then reared it up properly!

While doing some quick sketches this weekend for a project, I ran across this lineart tucked away in my sketchbook. I'm not entirely certain how old it is, but at a guess I'd say 2 years or so. I don't remember coloring it - and I'm not even sure if I scanned it - but it seemed like a fun one to try out some different techniques in Sai.

Still a WIP, and I'm not sure how earnestly I'll work toward finishing it. Right now, I'm just using it and a few others to stretch my art muscles as I dig into this other work.

WIP sketch for the day. I don't have time to finish this one tonight, and I really don't want to do a rush job. Hopefully I can finish it tomorrow after work.

Another of my favorite characters thus far from A Song of Ice & Fire, Sandor Clegane, aka the Hound. [1 image] )

I am not officially participating in [livejournal.com profile] artslam this summer, but I am trying to do at least a sketch a day on my own.

First up, one of my favorite characters from A Song of Ice & Fire, which I have been reading avidly the past month or so after some friends introduced me to the series.

The Rise and Fall of an Empire
Series: Seiken Densetsu II (Secret of Mana)
Characters: Geshtar, Thanatos
Rating: PG
Length: 3000

Notes: For the [community profile] no_true_pair challenge community, with a prompt of: I’ll become what I despise/Living someone else’s lies.

The first time Geshtar saw the sorcerer, he had been but a Captain of the Guard - young but tried, his loyalty to the throne and his people unwavering. )
Deadliest Catch - South Park Sig

Some of you know that I'm a big fan of Deadliest Catch. There have only ever been two good 'job documentary' shows on TV, and DC is one of them; the first was, of course, COPS. I've watched the series fairly religiously for the past 4+ years now, and I even follow feeds associated with a couple of the ships.

Hearing about Capt. Phil's health complications earlier this year - and then his death - was a very sad time. Seeing this evening's episode was a reminder of that.. but I felt that it was both tasteful and respectful of his memory. And of his friends and family. I wish them the best, especially Josh and Jake.

Here's to you, Phil.

Seriously need to start posting here more often..

Start of a sketch that I largely did today while on the ferry. I usually run errands across the river, which means I have downtime on the ride to & fro. Normally I just bring my laptop & aircard. Today, I also brought my sketchbook.

I recently got into Supernatural. Have a fanart for it. Technically, the image is a fairly large spoiler for episode 5.04 (The End), however it's one of those "only a huge spoiler if you know what it is and by then you have already seen it" types of things. Basically, I wanted to draw hellhounds.

Going to try and work on it a bit more over the next few days if I don't get too busy with other holiday prep.

Sorry, I have no new art to share right now. However, since I've finished my move, I did dig up a nice small treasure of older art - both of mine and of others. (The latter I intend to get framed soon to put up on my walls.) I decided to scan a few of the older images dating from around '95 to '01 for you amusement.

I have been neglecting the art/writing journal! Much of this is re-posted content from the [livejournal.com profile] artslam challenge, which I have regretfully abandoned due to outside commitments. There will be additional re-posted content related to Aarde in the near future, but most of the rest will be brand new to those who have followed Art Slam.

---

Aarde is the original story that I am working on amid two other fan-based writing projects. I previously referred to it as 'Elements'; it might gain a new name at some point in the future. Aarde itself is the world in which the story takes place. The story will be in the form of both writing and imagery.

When telling a story, be it in text or in imagery, one of the first things I have to feel comfortable with is the environment. If I don't feel like I have a full grasp of the environment, then it's very difficult for me to make something of any real quality. It's flat and forced.

I am designing Aarde from the bottom up. Yes, Aarde is a planet.. and a planet is certainly an environment. But a planet can be located within an environment of its own. A star system!

So first I started with a star...

Machen is the star for this system. It's slightly younger and smaller than our sun. It looks largely the same. The only noticeable difference due to both star type and atmospheric conditions is that its yellow light stage is lengthened both in the morning and evening, and there is a greater red shift in light at sunrise and sunset.

There are 9 planets that are considered part of the Machen star system. Aarde is the second planet from Machen - and one of two potentially habitable planets in the system.

On to the planets! [13 + bonus comparison image] )

For all of this, I fully welcome any form of concrit - especially from those who are more scientifically minded (or researched) than me. While my story has a number of fantasy-based elements, my goal is to make the world - and universe - as believable and grounded in real science as possible.

Best Worst Idea Ever? Quite possibly so.

This began as a conversation with [personal profile] kiwikiwi. I'm still not entirely certain how. I swear that the other purpose of this is to re-establish history for me for HPI, which I'm making some pretty decent progress on. That and it seriously was just too good of a bad crossover that I couldn't turn it up. Expect this set to just get short bits and pieces added to it here and there, which may or may not be done in chronological order. Or even be canonically accurate.

(Though once again I'm striving to stay as close to the source material as possible. And- hey! I even read up some on Crisis Core!)

Building Brighter Futures
Series: Final Fantasy VII/Angel crossover
Characters: Shinra, Gast
Rating: PG-13/L
Length: 1630

In order to look to the future, you have to have a past. In order to build brighter futures, ShinRa has to have an investor.

You realize that today is Saturday, right? Did you even consider calling her instead of me last night when it hit seven? If you wait too long, Ramuh knows that she'll start looking somewhere else - and then I won't hear the end of it, what with how you always bitch and moan for months when you can't get a date. )
FF7 - Turks - Loyalty
[personal profile] ilyat
This story began as a silly conversation with [personal profile] cypher that has since made me consider it more and more seriously with each passing day. I have always wanted to try a re-telling of the original FF7 story from the perspective of the Turks - or at least one of them - but never quite found the right starting device.

And then along came this.

HPI is a serious take at re-telling the entirety of the original game's story.. in a gender-swapped universe. Names are changed, and ALL characters are gender-swapped. There are exactly two names that I am considering retaining for the purposes of the fic, and both have a damn good reason why. As for the rest? I hope that it will ultimately become apparent as to just who personifies which character, but I don't mind stating up front if people prefer that.

Although the premise is silly, the fic itself is NOT crack and will NOT BE crack. I plan to update this chapter by chapter. While I do not have a final estimate of length, I am aiming for around 15-20 chapters or so of comparable or greater length than this prologue. I'm also aiming for a realistic completion by fall.

Right now, I don't have a beta reader - though I'd really love a volunteer, especially one familiar with the original game! (BC & CC knowledge is awesome but not necessary.) I am also not opposed to concrit. This is my first huge writing project, so please bear with me and be gentle. ^^

[personal profile] darthneko wrote up an AWESOME tutorial on how to install Doekaki BBS software to a server (with one of the intended purposes being to use it as a means for commenting via image to journal posts/comments). So I did exactly that.

It's been a while since I used any sort of Oekaki software, yet I remember liking it a lot. Now I remember why.

I did a couple of really horrible doodles. Then I started branching out. Have a few of the better ones them:

Those, uh, last three were actually drawn as fake journal entries for an RP game I applied for. Then I drew a Moony. 'cause I could.

She says she's awesome. I'm inclined to agree with her.

You know that a world concept is a roaring success if - within 24 hours of its inception - someone other than you is able to make a fully fleshed out and interesting character concept out of it. This one's for you, [livejournal.com profile] neogeen.

Linework of Sabriel for [livejournal.com profile] vampirelematt, his FF11 character. Colors soon.

I promised [personal profile] ponderosa a couple months back that I'd do a sketch of Red XIII. I ended up inking him. And then [livejournal.com profile] neogeen did all of the colors! (And they turned out so great! <3 daffodils) Original linework.

Quick little doodle + color to try out a new technique. Probably about 30 mins total between sketching, inking, and coloring with ArtRage. What you don't see in the b&w lineart is that there are really lots and lots of sketch lines everywhere!

I've known about those non-photo blue drafting pencils for a long while but never actually had a chance to try using them. Until now. While out running errands, I made it my personal mission to try and track down one if they were sold locally. Two craft stores and three office supply stores later.. I finally found some at JoAnne Fabrics - of all places. And even then the only reason why I found them was that I asked the framing lady if she had ever heard of them. And she had! She used them all the time apparently for sharing knitting patterns .. and that was where they were located in the store. Nowhere near drafting, nowhere near drawing/art supplies. They were in the knitting section.

But at least they were there.

I'm going to try to play around with them some this afternoon. I already like what possibilities they open up.

...and Justina again, now finished. Pen + ArtRage + minimal Photoshop. I actually did the linework last night in just over one hour, which is insanely fast for me. And the colors? About three more, with a couple of brief breaks and conversations in between start and finish.

I actually did a ustream broadcast of the coloring phase. It seemed to go well enough. I'm going to try it again soon while keeping an eye on my bandwidth usage.. If it's something that's feasible for me to do semi-regularly, I might just start doing it more.

I really want to give her a hug. She looks so soft and floofy. Somehow, I don't think that she would fully appreciate that.
